What Koreans ACTUALLY Think of "The 21st Century Grand Duchess" (Fact Check & Review)

The world is buzzing with the megahit K-drama, "The 21st Century Grand Duchess" (21세기 대군부인), starring global icons IU (아이유) and Byeon Woo-seok (변우석)! As a Korean viewer watching this global phenomenon, I’ve noticed some fascinating points that I wanted to share with our international fans.

💡 A Quick Fact Check: Does Korea Still Have a Monarchy?

Before we dive into the review, I must clarify one thing for our global readers. Unlike the UK or Japan, modern-day South Korea does NOT have a living monarchy. Korea is a republic. The "Royal Family" you see in this drama is entirely fictional, based on an "alternative history" premise. While we take great pride in our heritage, kings and queens today exist only in our history books and K-dramas!

Critical Analysis: What We Love (and Miss)

While the IU-Byeon Woo-seok chemistry is legendary, local "K-netizens" have had some honest discussions about the show's weaknesses.

1. The 12-Episode Constraint: Lack of Supporting Cast Chemistry

Because the series is only 12 episodes long, the focus is heavily skewed toward the leads. Unfortunately, this means the supporting characters haven't had enough screen time to develop real chemistry or subplots. It feels like a missed opportunity for a richer story.

2. Weak Villains vs. Power Leads

Compared to the overwhelming presence and backstory of IU and Byeon Woo-seok, the villains feel a bit "thin." Their motivations and impact lack depth because the script prioritizes the main couple's screen time.

3. Visual Power over Narrative Depth

Many Korean viewers feel that this drama is being carried by its overwhelming visual power. The sheer beauty of the cinematography and the leads' visuals are so strong that they "force" the viewers to keep watching, even when the plot has holes. It’s a drama driven by visual charisma!

The Explosive "Bonbangsasu" Fever in Korea

Despite these minor critiques, the popularity here is insane. There is a joke among Koreans that "the streets become ghost towns" on Friday and Saturday nights because everyone is rushing home for "Bonbangsasu" (watching the original broadcast live).

What do you think, International Fans?

We Koreans are seeing these pros and cons, but we are still hooked! How about you?

Are you enjoying the visuals, or do you also feel the story is a bit rushed? Let me know in the comments!

PS. it's raining now
